- Ads & slides — let an audience download as they watch.
- Events & business cards — share your app in one scan.
Tips for an app code that converts
- Use a smart link (iOS → App Store, Android → Google Play) so one code fits everyone.
- If you ship on one platform only, link that store directly.
- Add a caption: "Scan to download the app".
- Keep strong contrast and a white margin so every camera reads it.
One code cannot point at both app stores
This is the thing that catches everyone out. An App Store URL opens the App Store. A Google Play URL opens Play. A QR code holds one URL, so a single code cannot send iPhone users to one and Android users to the other — not by itself.
There are three honest ways around it:
- Point at a page you control. Put both store buttons on a page on your own site and link the QR code there. Costs one extra tap, works everywhere, and you keep the analytics. This is what most apps do.
- Detect and redirect. On that same page, read the user agent and forward iOS to the App Store and Android to Play automatically. No extra tap, but you own the code.
- Use a smart-link service. Several handle the split for you. Be aware you are putting a third party in the path — if they go away or start charging, every printed code you have already shipped goes with them.
If your app is on one platform only, ignore all of this and link the store page directly.
Getting the right store link
- Google Play —
play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=your.package.name. The package name is the identifier, not the app's display name. - App Store —
apps.apple.com/app/id123456789. The numeric ID is the stable part; the slug before it is cosmetic and can change. - Strip any
?utm_…or referrer junk the browser added unless you deliberately want that tracking — it makes the URL longer and the code denser for no benefit. - Test the code from a phone that does not have the app installed. That is the only state that matters.
App QR code FAQ
Can one QR code send iPhone users to the App Store and Android users to Google Play?
Not on its own. A QR code holds one URL, and a store link opens only that store. Point the code at a page on your own site with both store buttons, or redirect by device on that page. A smart-link service can also do it, but it puts a third party in the path of every code you have already printed.
Where do I find the right store link?
Google Play uses play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=your.package.name, where the package name is the identifier rather than the display name. The App Store uses apps.apple.com/app/id123456789, where the numeric ID is the stable part.
One code for both stores?
Yes — point it at a smart link or small landing page that sends iPhone users to the App Store and Android users to Google Play.
Where's my store link?
Open your app's listing on the App Store or Google Play, tap Share and copy the link.
Is it free?
Yes. Generate unlimited app QR codes free and download as PNG. SVG and 4K print files are free too.
Can I brand it?
Colors and a center logo are both free to change.
