A Spotify Code — also called a Spotify barcode or a Spotify scan code — is the little sound-wave graphic that sits under the album art in the Spotify app. Point the Spotify app's camera at one and it opens that exact track, album, playlist, artist or podcast. Artists put them on merch, vinyl sleeves, gig posters and stickers so fans can jump straight to the music.
This generator builds the code from Spotify's own scannable service, so what you download is the real thing — not a lookalike. Nothing is uploaded, and there is no account to make.
How to generate a Spotify Code
- Copy the link — in Spotify, open the track, album, playlist, artist or podcast → three dots → Share → Copy link.
- Paste it above — the code appears immediately.
spotify:track:…URIs work too. - Pick your look — background colour, black or white bars, width and file format.
- Download — PNG for screens, SVG for print, JPEG for the smallest file.
Spotify Code or QR code — which do you need?
They are genuinely different, and it is worth knowing which one your audience can actually use.
A Spotify Code — the one this page makes — only scans from inside the Spotify app: Search → the camera icon in the search bar → point. A normal phone camera will not open it. It looks unmistakably like Spotify, which is exactly why it works on album artwork and merch aimed at people who already use the app.
A QR code scans with any phone camera, no app required. That is the one you want on a poster, a business card or packaging, where most people will not have Spotify open. Our Spotify QR code generator makes those.
Rule of thumb: a Spotify Code for people already inside Spotify, a QR code for everyone else.
Getting a code that scans every time
- Keep the contrast strong. White bars on a dark background or black bars on a light one. Low contrast is the main reason a code fails to scan.
- Print at 3 cm wide or more. Smaller than that and the bar heights get lost.
- Use SVG for print. It stays sharp at any size; a 320 px PNG blown up to poster size will not.
- Leave clear space around it. Do not crop the code tight or lay text over it.
- Test before you print. Open Spotify → Search → camera icon → scan it off your screen.
Spotify Codes on merch, vinyl and posters
This is what most people actually want a Spotify Code for: a physical thing that sends someone straight into your music. It is a printing problem more than a design one, and the same handful of mistakes account for nearly every code that will not scan off paper or fabric.
Vinyl sleeves and CD packaging
- Back cover, bottom corner is the convention — near the label credits, away from the spine.
- Keep it off the fold. A code printed across a gatefold crease will not read once the sleeve has been opened a few times.
- Avoid spot gloss and varnish over the code. The glare under shop lighting is the single most common reason a sleeve code fails while the artwork proof scanned fine.
- 4–5 cm wide is comfortable on a 12" sleeve; do not go below 3 cm on a CD digipack.
T-shirts and apparel
- White bars on a dark garment — set the background to match the fabric and the bars to white. Do not print a white block around the code.
- Print it flat. Sleeves, shoulders and anywhere the fabric stretches will distort the bar spacing and break the scan.
- 6 cm minimum on apparel. Screen printing loses fine detail that survives on paper, and the bar gaps are the first thing to fill in.
- Screen print holds the bars better than DTG on dark cotton.
Gig posters, flyers and stickers
- Size it to scanning distance. A rough rule: the code wants to be about a tenth of the distance people scan from. A poster read from two metres wants a code around 20 cm wide.
- Matte beats gloss for stickers and flyers, for the same glare reason.
- On a busy poster, give the code a plain panel of its own rather than laying it over artwork.
Before you send it to print
- Download the SVG, not the PNG. Your printer will thank you and it stays sharp at any size.
- Never stretch it. A Spotify Code has a fixed aspect ratio; scaling one axis breaks it.
- Test the proof, not the screen. Print one at final size on the actual stock and scan it under normal lighting before you commit to a run.
- Remember a Spotify Code only opens from the Spotify app's camera. If your audience is the general public rather than existing Spotify listeners, print a Spotify QR code instead — that one works with any phone camera.
Spotify Code FAQ
Is a Spotify Code the same as a Spotify barcode?
Yes — they are two names for the same thing. People search for a "Spotify barcode maker" or "Spotify scan code", but Spotify's official name is a Spotify Code. It is the sound-wave strip of bars under the album art, and this page makes it.
Is it free?
Yes — unlimited codes, no account, no watermark. The images come from Spotify's own scannable service.
How do I download it as a PNG?
Choose PNG as the format and press Download. SVG is better for anything printed, and JPEG if you need a flat background.
How does someone scan it?
In the Spotify app: Search → the camera icon in the search bar → point at the code. A normal phone camera will not open a Spotify Code.
Can I change the colours?
Yes. Any background colour you like, with black or white bars. Keep the contrast strong or it will not scan.
Does it work for playlists and podcasts?
Yes — tracks, albums, playlists, artists, podcasts and individual episodes all work. For a playlist you are printing for guests, see the Spotify playlist QR code guide.
Will the code stop working?
No. It points at a permanent Spotify ID, so it keeps working as long as that track or playlist exists.
Why does my printed Spotify Code not scan?
Nearly always one of four things: gloss or varnish over the code causing glare, not enough contrast between the bars and the background, the code printed too small, or the image stretched so the aspect ratio changed. Print a test at final size on the actual stock and scan that, rather than trusting an on-screen proof.
Can I put a Spotify Code on a t-shirt?
Yes. Set the background to match the garment and the bars to white, keep it at least 6 cm wide, and place it somewhere flat — fabric that stretches across a sleeve or shoulder distorts the bar spacing and breaks the scan. Screen printing holds the detail better than DTG on dark cotton.
What size should a Spotify Code be for printing?
Use SVG for anything printed — it stays sharp at any size. If you need a raster file, pick the largest pixel width and keep the printed code at least 3 cm wide, with clear space around it.
